Boo! 'Summerween' is upon us

Something scary is happening at a Walgreens near you, Halloween shopping season has arrived in August. Why are retailers focusing on ghosts and ghouls now?
Is it already pumpkin spice season?
You walk into your local pharmacy-slash-mini-superstore on a hot August morning, turning down the aisle toward the back where they keep the basic over-the-counter remedies these places are known for, only to find something that gives you a shiver.
On the "seasonal aisle" sits a bag of candy corn. Across the aisle are skeletons, plastic pumpkins and those balls with white cloth wrapped over them that serve as floating ghosts.

That's right, on Aug. 10, 2026, Halloween has already arrived.
I'm still focused on summer, yet here I’m in shorts and flip-flops jumping ahead nearly three months to Halloween.
Even if you give a generous amount of time to the spooky season, most people aren't in that mindset until a month from now.
Yet, consumerism is in full effect to start adding to that massive plastic bin (or two) of Halloween stuff you have had in your crawl space for the past nine months.
It's all about 'Summerween' shopping
Doesn't this seem like a huge distraction as many of us try to enjoy the waning weeks (or days) of summer until school and regular work schedules kick in?
This is a targeted marketing attack aimed at getting an early slice of what the National Retail Federation says is a $13.1 billion spooky sales pie. The earlier the better: "consumers continue to gravitate toward early shopping. Nearly half of consumers (49%) began shopping in September or earlier."
"Halloween shopping now starts as early as summer, driven by 'Summerween' and higher-spending younger consumers, with millennials and Gen Z leading year-over-year growth," online marketing firm Publitas says. "For Halloween retail strategy, this requires phased campaign launches across August, September, and October to capture early demand and sustain relevance through peak."
August might be too late to get the Halloween shopper focused. Mid-May is the time to start building momentum, Publitas says.
So this distraction has been months in the making? And it's only ramping up from here thanks to modern digital habits:
"Stores should feel like destinations. Interactive displays, haunted setups, and selfie-friendly zones encourage footfall and social sharing," Publitas says.
It seems like the distraction lies in social media and the FOMO that comes with it. "The 'Summerween' phenomenon, driven heavily by TikTok and Gen Z culture, means meaningful spend is now happening in July and August," Publitas says.
This is the new reality🎃🏖️
Sorry, but focus on summer fun is likely now going to be clouded by the early distraction of Halloween. So, now might be the time to start thinking about your costume. And if you like candy corn, your sweet tooth is getting some early satisfaction—even if you still have a bag of last year's Halloween candy sitting on a high shelf in your pantry.
